Day 18

Honestly today was really boring day because i didn't work much. I only helped "Sabra" with the visit and workshop I aslo organized the chlidren books by it category in the children section. Hope tomorrow is better!

Day 17

Day :Monday
Date: April 26th 2010

What i did today :-

• Print some important papers and put in the folders
• Check the newspaper and make sure if the all arrived
• Helped "MAHA" with the visit and take some photos of the students while they are working to attach it in the report.

Day 16

When I arrived to the library I went to Ms.Dora's office and say hi to her and I asked her about how she want me to write the suggestions and she told me "as you like". Then, she asked me if can help "MAHA" with the school visit today because the other employee "ALIA" she couldn’t come to the work and of course I said yeas and I'm happy to do that .

After taking to Ms.Dora me and "MAHA" went towards the books to arrange it and make sure that every book is in the right place.

About 9:00am before the visitors came we prepare what they will need for the workshop from paper, glow, scissors …..Etc
About 10:00am the visitors came and we take them for a tour inside the library and then we went to the children section to do the workshop, at 12:00pm the students went back to the school and I return to the information desk to help.

Day 15

Today I complete scanning the CD's. Moreover Mr.Tridib came to visit us in the library and talk to my supervisor. While he was talking with my supervisor "Dora" I was organizing the CD's that I scanned it for 2 days on the shelves by it order with "Zahra". After Mr.Tridib finished the meeting with my supervisor I take him a tour around the library and explain where we put the new books and how and where the people using the internet …. Etc
After Mr.Tridib left, I return to the information desk and complete my work and this is how my day ended

Day 14

At the morning, about 9:30 a woman came to use the internet and she ask someone to help here because she don’t know how to access the internet and how to write the website address, I went with her to one of the computers and open the internet to her she wanted to access Dubai T.V watch a program online so, I helped her to access all that and she thanked me for doing this favor. After that, “Maha” has to scan all the CDs which is in the library so, I grab this opportunity since “Sabra” teach me how to use the scanner and she was okay with that. The scanning begins from 10:00 am until the end of the day which 2:00 pm I scan about 138 CDs. I was willing to scan more than that but they decided that we have to stop and complete the work tomorrow.

Day 13

Today I had a meeting with my supervisor Ms.Dora to talk to me what I will do in the next two weeks. My next job is to do a small project that will help the e-library and some of the suggestion that will serve the e-library and how I can develop the facilities on it. Moreover, she told me that the project and list of suggestions is optional you can do it or you can work on the information desk with the rest of the employees. So, I decided that I will be thinking of some suggestions that will help the library and also I will be working on the information desk and help the employees.

Day 12

I was absent because i were very sick. I contact my supervisor Ms. Dora to tell her that I won’t able to come today because I’m very tired.

Day 11

What I did today:
· Printed some papers for my supervisor.
· Printed papers for the customers.
· Set on information desk to help the customers/ answers questions about the library and how they can sign up for member ship.
· Took to my supervisor about the appointment with my supervisor.

I learned today how to use the library scanner and thanks to "Sabra" who teach me how to use it.

Day 10

It’s the end of the week and there is only three employees in the library; me “Maha” and “Hessa”.In the morning I take the newspaper and write down the issue number of each to enter it in the system to make sure that the issue is received. After that, “Maha” asked me if I know how to use the Photoshop and I said “yes, how can I help you” she said that she want to design a paper for the children section. I said don’t worry I will do it for you and I will finish it before the end of the day. So, she told me exactly what she wants and how she wants it. After that, I used the computer that is available in the library and I set there to search for the pictures that I need to do the design. When I finished designing it was about 12 o’clock after that, there was another task I have to do which is to calculate the income of the service that they provide in the library from and to specific date. I was helping “Maha” and “Hessa” with that until 2:30 pm. I was so tired because I didn’t have a break between the two tasks but, at least I did something new this day.

Day 9

Today I return back to seqeim library. Me and “Maha” went to visit a school to do a workshop for the student .It was about how to use the papers to create useful things that they can use it. The student where from preparatory school and we really enjoyed our time because they were so excited about the workshop. After we finished the workshop the librarian thanked us for the great work and she take us to the school headmistress in turn she thanked us too and gave us a gift and certificate because we participated in school library week and this is how my Day 9 ends.

Day 8

Day: Tuesday Date: 13-4-2010

I’m still in AlSafa library. Today they told to work on the information desk. At the morning I categorize the books that are outside the shelves according to their orders to take it back to the shelves it took more than 30mins to organize the books. After that I sat at the information desk to help people who needs help also to help people if they have some questions about the library. Moreover, “Aisha” who are a employee working in information desk told me that there are a visitor from school will visit the library and you can go and help “Maryam” & “Aisha” who are going to introduce the students to the library so, I went with them and saw how the students was excited about the library. Furthermore, they told us today is our last day in AlSafa library and tomorrow we have to go back to Umm seqeim library, I’m very excited because I will see the employees again who I work with them 1 week and I already missed them.

Day 7

Day: Monday Date: 12-4-2010

I’m still in AlSafa library. Today they told to work on the information desk. I’m very shy because I met new employee that I didn't saw them before. One of the employees gave a chair to set on it and told me the library and how they categorize the books and where are the Arabic and English books. Also, she shows me where the lady section and the men section for the internet users. The day all about how the work is done in their library because it’s my first time and I don’t know how the things work there. I learned today how to get used to new people and I have to be always friendly with people.

Day 6

I received a call from my supervisor “Dora” yesterday and she told me that the library will be closed because they have some security issue and they will not open it until they solve the problem. Also, she told me that I have to work in Al Safah library with the rest of the employees.

Today I didn’t do much of work because there is already employees who are working there put I told them if you need any help you can ask me and I will be happy to help.

Me and alia our job was to write on a paper that the library is closed and go to Umm seqeim library to attach the paper on the wall.

There was also a small problem with the appointment which is with my supervisor and Mr.Tridib. What I did is that I sent an email to Mr.Tridib and I explain to him the situation because he can’t meet my supervisor because she is working in Al-Tawar library and I’m working in Al Safah library and I’m looking forward to solve this problem as soon as possible

Day 5

It’s the end of the week and the library is calm. when I arrived in the morning there was lots of newspaper that needs stamp so, me and Zahra take all the newspaper and write down the all the newspapers names on paper because then we have to add it to the database.

Then about 10:15 some visitors came from high school to discover the library and get to know more about it services and benefits. My job was to take some picture of them why they are walking around the library and also, I printed some questionnaires and distributed among them plus I distributed some brochures about the library.

About 11:30 who are Responsible for the 7 libraries around Dubai came to our library to monitor how the working is is going. Then, he called my name and talk to me about the work and ask me what I learned so far , he also motivate me to work hard and he said: “you are her to benefits yourself and to benefits us in the same time “. After that he wished me good luck and I left my supervisor office to set at the reception desk to see if anybody needs help.

Day 4

Today is Wednesday 7th April 2010; I reached the work at 7:15. I talk to my supervisor “Dora” to pick a suitable date to meet Mr.Tridib next week and I also talked to her to give more work to do and she told that you shouldn’t hesitate and asks the employee to give you work . After I got out from her office I saw “Maha” is entering the newspaper and magazine in the database so, I grab the opportunity and I told if I can do it , she agreed and set beside me to watch and Monitors me to make sure I’m not making any mistakes .

After that I cut some paper for the workshop. Also, we receive new books from the central library. Me and “Huda” work on this task, our task was to take the paper that have all the name of books that we received and check the one that exist so, every book we take we have to make sure to tick the name of that book in the list of books and It was about six boxes full of books. The next step is to enter the books in library’s database by using program called Horizon. After that it was time to put the new books on the right shelve. So, today was a busy work and I applied what I learned it yesterday which “Maha” teach me the steps on how to receive the books from the central library.

Also, for today I did very simple work which putting the papers of in their right folder, I printed some papers and I open the internet for the customers.

Day 3

today in the morning i was very nervous because i go out from home late and I was afraid to not reach to my work placement on time and what will make it difficult is the traffic jam but at the end I arrived exactly at 7:30 I ran to sign on my signature card.

Morover, i met new people today who are Zahra and Alia. Zahra was facing promblem in reading the name of books because the hand writting was so bad I offered to help her out on reading them and i helped her with somes name.

my task for day 3 as it is mentioned in the work plan that i have to learned how to access to the data entry of the monthly report. Alia was helping me to do that and she showed me the website and how can i enter the data in the website.

After that was suppose to teach me the rest of the tasks. First, she teaches how to send letter by fax. Then, she teaches me how to send materials that are damaged to the binding and what the main steps to do that. Moreover, I learn how to sort materials according to the cognitive approach. Also, she showed what to do if we got new books from the central library and where we put it.

Day 2

Today was my first day in Umm seqeim electronic library. First when I arrived I met my supervisor “Dora Al Hamadi” and she welcomed me then she introduced me to the rest of the employers who are Hessa, Maha, Sabra and Rania. After that, she printed my work plan and gave it to me. The work plan include the exact place which I will work in and the tasks that I should do and what the training materials that I should learn during my work placement.

After I received my work plan, Sabra who is on of the employers in e-library showed me the place to identify the current awareness services and electronic services in the library. Then, she started to teach about some important forms that they use it in daily basis. She showed to me the duty resumption form, leave request form and the membership form. I learned from this the important contents of each form and what we should write in each field.Also, I learned how to do make a member ship card and the prices of the types of member ships card.Furthermore, I learned about the main program that the all libraries around Dubai is using it which is called Horizon. This program used by employers in daily basis to insert the bar code of books and to upload all the new books and newspaper that they have it’s like a database.

About 10:30 “Maha” told me that if your I’m interesting to attend the session with visitors from school and to help her to prepare the gifts for the games and I said I’m happy to help her. This session was to teach the students about the important of reading and how they use the facilities in the library. Finally, I really enjoyed my time and I had fun with those beautiful kids also, it was good to get out of routine.

Day 23

"Alia" and "Zahra" the employees who are working today. In the morning we check the news paper and I put in their places . Moreover, yesterday, we moved books to make space and today we are going to move the new books form the "Arrival books" section to put it on the empty shelves.

"Alia" continue working in moving books me and "Zahra" take down the new books from the shelves and put each category together. After doing that my next job is to take group of books and organize it on the shelves and make sure that the books sorted in a correct way.

Day 1

Today was my first day at work in Dubai Public library. I arrived there at 7:15 AM to make sure that I don't be late. When I arrived I asked the reception about my supervisor and they told me to talk to the secretary of the director of Public Libraries Department because she is responsible for the work placement and stuff. So, I waited their about 1 hour and half until she came. After she came, I introduced myself to her and she told me that we have to transfer you to the electronic library which is in Umm seqeim because you can apply your major their better and for today I have to stay and work with them.

Then they introduce me to some employers that I work with them today in department of supply. the employer "Maryam Al-Mulla" ask me to help her and I told her I’m happy to do that since there is not a lot of work to do and I have to do something during the 7 hours.

My first work was to label the books with stickers that have numbers and letters on them to make it recognizable which was very easy and everybody can do it but I have to be careful that each code are on the right book.

After I finished labeling the books I set for a 10mins and then I felt that I’m bored and I have to do something to let the time passes so, I asked Maryam Al-Mulla again if she need help because I saw that she has many work to do.

So, my second task was to categories the books according to the areas and put in the shelves.

At the end of the day I was so happy to meet nice and friendly people and I was sad because i will not work with them tomorrow.
